The Halyards

Dreamtime

Far from the eyes
Of the rest of the world
Far from the cities
Hidden from view
A fire is burning
The sparks flying high
The Old Ones are dreaming
In the Outback tonight

Far away
In the Dreamtime
Life begins
In the Dreamtime
Walk away
Down the Songlines
Sing away
The Dreaming starts again

The Old Ones believe
Gods walked the land
Creating the world
In songs that they sang
This was the Dreamtime
And when it was gone
The song was the land
And the land was the song

Modern man
A wonder to see
We can send a thought around the world
In the time it takes you to breathe
We know so much
But, don’t understand
The land is the song
And the song is the land

Far away
In the Dreamtime
Life begins
In the Dreamtime
Walk away
Down the Songlines
Sing away
The Dreaming starts again

Heartbroken Man

Glazed over eyes
Her words came slowly
She apologized
I said don’t worry
Just tell me why
So I’ll understand
I’m not a jealous guy
But, I am
A heartbroken man

You were gone so long
Is all she tells me
I’m just not strong
The night’s so lonely
And he was here
It crept up on me slowly
I didn't mean to fall in love
But now, just let me go please

Just tell me why
So I’ll understand
I’m not a jealous guy
But, I am
A heartbroken man

I call her name
God knows I don’t want to
I picture him
Knowing things that I knew
Glazed over eyes
My words come slowly
I apologize and she says
No need to worry
No need to worry

Big City Girls

I’m in the corner
You’re in your usual place
Lights of the city
Reflecting on and off your face
No stereo on, no TV
No murmur of a broken heart
You never tell me you miss me
You’re too proud to play that part

Big city girls have a way of being all right

I wonder could you ask me
Just once where I’ve been
You take it for granted
I’ll always be back again
If there was another woman
Would you even want to know
You never tell me you love me
You’re too scared to let it show

Big city girls have a way of being all right
Big city girls have a way to get through the night
Big city girls never cry when they’re left alone
Big city girls are the rule, and the city’s their own
And you’re a big city girl
You’re a big city girl
No tears from a big city girl

Swirl

All of my life
I have stood here in the rain
Watching the world
And you know I can’t explain
Deep in the shadows I explored
Call it a kingdom or a ghetto
Saw one thousand tribal wars
Under one blue shinning sky

Riding the dream
What can we do
Caught in the Swirl of the black and the blue
Heart of the world
So hard to know
Holding a mirror to a mirror to a--

So here I am
Like some Catcher in the Rye
Don’t have a plan
No religion to live by
Watching the blind who lead the blind
Wondering why they’re always smiling
Like they’ve left themselves behind
And just gone on holiday

It’s only the world
Lost in the heart of the Swirl

Riding the dream
What can we do
Caught in the Swirl of the black and the blue
Heart of the world
Too strange to know
Holding a mirror to a mirror to a soul
Riding the dream
What can I do
Caught in the Swirl of the black and the blue

It Falls on Me

Everytime I see you
I just want to run and hide
You put your head in your heads
And the teardrops fill your eyes
You say, do your best to understand me
It’s just a phase I’m in right now

It falls on me
All the weight of your weeping
It falls on me
And I just can’t hold up anymore

Everything’s a crisis
Something’s always going wrong
You’re misery’s child
And the tragedy goes on and on
Sometimes I think you’re going crazy
Or is it me who’s crazy now

It falls on me
All the weight of your weeping
It falls on me
And I just can’t hold up anymore

Well, you talk, talk, talk
And nothing ever seems to change
So pull yourself together now
Or have the guts to go insane
You ought to know you’ve got a good thing
You've got to know that much by now

It falls on me
All the weight of your weeping
It falls on me
And I just can’t hold up anymore

Walking With the Dead

The pistol was in my hand
It was dark and cold and mean
If I were a weaker man
Well, who know what might have been
I stood there for a lifetime
Madness in my head
Frightened of the man inside me
Walking with the dead

Walking with the dead
Talking to the lifeless
Eyes that show no pain
Walking with the dead
Walking with my head held low

You know I’m a working man
It’s so hard to get ahead
They promise the sun and stars
And then bury you instead
Slave away a lifetime
To earn the daily bread
Until you find the man inside you
Walking with the dead

Walking with the dead
Talking to the lifeless
Eyes that show no pain
Walking with the dead
Walking with my head held low

From ashes we all come
From ashes I will rise
I swear it by the moon
I will win my peace of mind
From nothingness comes meaning
Emptiness an edge
I will learn to live again
By walking with the dead

The Party

Threw a party for myself
Invited me and no one else
Bought some wine although I’m broke
And laughed at my own stupid jokes

Addressed your picture on the wall
Like a fool before the fall
Shouted don’t need you at all
And hoped like hell that you’d call

I can’t keep my head
When I think of the things that you said
But, I guess I know
The words that I’m singing
Will never be bringing you home

Threw a party for myself
Invited me and no one else
I celebrated being free
And dreamed of gold chains all around me

I can’t keep my head
When I think of the things that we said
But, I guess I know
The words that I’m singing
Will never be bringing you home

Fall Together

Tell me you’ve got no secrets
Tell me everything’s all right
Tell me you’ve got no reason
Not to stay with me tonight
Tell me I’m the one you choose
I will cast my lot with you
And we’ll both fall together
Or together we will rise

Forgive me my trespasses
All those times I let you down
If loneliness was an ocean
Well, I know you almost drowned
If you’re tired and insecure
I will be there at your door
And we’ll both fall together
Or together we will rise

Maybe I made you crazy
Maybe you think I don’t know why
The tear drops fell in rivers from your eyes
Maybe you’d understand me
If I told you I’m only like you
A lonely soul who sometimes feels confused

Tell me you’ve got no secrets
Tell me I’m the only one
Tell me that I won’t lose you
To anything or anyone
If this world should make me choose
I will cast my lot with you
And we’ll both fall together
Or together we will rise

Take Your Time

Take your time
That’s what she said
Pour yourself a cup of coffee
And I’ll make the bed
A morning moon
Is in the sky
All the screamers of the night
Have passed us by

See the world
Come to life
See the streets fill up with people
In the morning light
I’ll take my time
Take it in
There’s no place I have to be
No prize to win

I’m strolling down my road to ruin
I don’t believe I’ll be there soon
I don’t know why, I don’t care when
It ain’t no sin
I take my time

See the world
Running down
One by one
The lights go off around this town
Time for dreams
Behind the blinds
And she turns to me and tells me
Take your time

I’m strolling down my road to ruin
I don’t believe I’ll be there soon
I don’t know why, I don’t care when
It ain’t no sin
I take my time
